Molly, Nikki, and I sat around in my studio that Sunday morning and I wished all mornings could be like this: a woman getting makeup done while we relaxed, knowing that we were going to make some magic. The more I shoot, the more relaxed I get with it. I know exactly how I want each image to look and how to pose women to make them look their best. There’s a definite assurance that comes with knowing who you are and sinking in to what you are doing. This is how I felt during Molly’s shoot: relaxed and sure. I hope everyone who steps into my studio gets to feel this way.

Molly, you are so beautiful and amazing. You make me laugh with your sharp wit and extremely extensive knowledge of Friends trivia. I hope you treasure these pictures.

Deidre had the first glamour portrait session I’d ever shot. I didn’t call it glamour and I honestly didn’t know what I was doing. I still have two of her images framed at my desk, with the laughable photoshopping and all. Lovely Deidre, however, has always trusted me completely, through leading her over fences and into abandoned buildings while she tried not to rip her pageant gown. Now that I have a better idea of what I’m doing, it only seemed right that she, with her  gorgeous gowns and eyes you could fall into, would be one of my first “Saturdays in the Studio.” I’m filling these Saturdays with beautiful photo shoots. This is my passion. I invite you to join me. Find your beautiful. Rest in it as it welcomes you back to your true self.

“There is nothing more rare, nor more beautiful, than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty.”

Steve Maraboli

I see beauty in women. As women, we don’t see it or we’re told to be humble, to accept a compliment and to give one in return. We mustn’t believe that we are gorgeous and we definitely shouldn’t do our hair and make-up to the nines every day.

I see beauty in women. The ones who are walking down Greek Row or the ones walking down a grocery store aisle with three kids in tow. In sweats or in a sequined ball gown. The women who are working to make a living, working to make a home, working for everyone at the sacrifice of herself.

I see the beauty in their eyes. When they’re crying, when they’re full of exhaustion, when they’re sparkling with excitement while telling a story. It’s in their smile when you really connect.

Too often we don’t see it. In this beautiful TED Talk from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (which Queen Bey later sampled in ***Flawless), she stated, “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, ‘You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man… Why should a woman’s success be a threat to a man?”

I give you the right. The right to be beautiful, the right to be successful, the right to let yourself shine and to not apologize for it. I give you the right to acknowledge your beauty and grace and to celebrate it in pictures. Dear beautiful women, I would give it all to you if I could, but this inheritance is not mine to give. It is up to you to claim it. I can’t sit with you in the mirror and make you see your own beauty. All I can do is take pictures, the most beautiful pictures you’ve ever seen of yourself and hope it starts to sink in: You are beautiful. No matter what.

This summer I had the opportunity to photograph a group of the most beautiful, sweet, and intelligent young women to grace the UNL campus. Alright, I’m slightly biased as an alumna of Tri Delta – Kappa Chapter myself. I had so much fun laughing and spending time with them, remembering the years I spent at 1601 R St. DLAM – Sage

Hey, come here. I have something to tell you!

YOU. ARE. GORGEOUS.

Yes, you. You’re absolutely beautiful and you are completely loved. Your smile, your love, your passions, and your laugh. You are unique and wonderful and I couldn’t wait to see you to tell you.

If you need a little more convincing, watch this video from John Legend. (mildly NSFW).
